Word Up: Kid Cudi

I appreciate good songwriting. Thus, I find it important to draw your attention to the lyrics of a songs because I don't think we pay enough attention to what we are listening to. Even songs that we hear all the time can take on a new meaning when we really stop and pay attention to the emotion behind it and what the artist was trying to say. It's like analyzing a novel, you take what you want from it as well as try to figure out what the author was trying to say.

Kid Cudi moved to NYC by himself back in '04 to live with his uncle whom he'd never met. He was the only remaining relative left on his father's side of the the family after his dad died when Cudi was just 12 yrs. old. After a while his uncle kicked him out with no where to stay. Cudi refused to speak to him after that, then his uncle died shortly after in 2006. "I never apologized and that killed me. That's when I wrote 'Day 'N Nite'"...

I didn't post a link to the song because it deserves to be read like a memoir rather than in melody. Hit the jump to read what I'm talking about.

LET THERE BE LIGHT!...

Day 'N Nite
Day and night I toss and turn. I keep stressin' my mind.
I look for peace, but see I don't attain. What I need for keeps this silly game we play. . . Play.
Now look at this. Madness the magnet keeps attracting me.
I try to run, but see I'm not that fast. I think I'm first but surely finish last. . . Last.

'Cause day and night, the lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night.
He's all alone through the day and night.
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night. Ah ah at night.
Day and night, the lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night. He's all alone, some things will never change. The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night. Ah ah at night.

Hold the phone.
The lonely stoner: Mr. Solo Dolo.
He's on the move, can't seem to shake the shade.
Within his dreams he sees the life he made. . . Made.
The pain is deep. A silent sleeper, you won't hear a peep.
The girl he wants don't seem to want him too.
It seems the feelings that she had are through. . . Through.

Slow Mo'.
When the tempo slows up and creates that new, new.
He seems alive, though he is feelin' blue.
The sun is shining. Man he's super cool. . . Cool.
The lonely nights, they fade away. He slips into his white Nikes.
He smokes a clip and then he's on the way to free his mind in search of... to free his mind in search of... to free his mind in search of...

Day and night, the lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night.
He's all alone through the day and night.
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night. Ah ah at night.
Day and night, the lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night. He's all alone, some things will never change. The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night. Ah ah at night.
