Hey! I wrote some stuff. Watch it. Read it. Love it... Thank me later:Life is nothing more than a collection of moments that form an evolving definition of who you are based on both how you act during those moments and how you REact after them (Read that again. That was dope). Some of these moments are more important than others. Thus, they have greater defining potential. In such times, the outcome can be simplified into two categories: success or failure.
I wanna talk about this because so often in sports we see these defining moments either make or break a player. The term for the latter has been coined as "the choke" and, for many, it's that silent fart in a room full of execs; something no one wants deal with even though the possibility for it to occur is always lurking whether we acknowledge it or not. However, if not dealt with, it can lead to loads (pun?) of humiliation.
In life, when we find ourselves in these defining moments, it is important that we are able to be successful in them and thus, take one more step toward the idealized image we have for ourselves. In order to do this, we must know the 5 components that make up any defining moment and thrive in them: [Hit the jump to find out just what they are]
Pressure
Opportunity
Action
Outcome
Reaction
Before I get into these, let me define what a "Defining Moment" is right quick. A defining moment is any piece of your life that you deem important. It is not reduced to simply big pressure moments where people are watching. Sure, those moments may define you more than the smaller ones, but a lotta small things add up to big ones. A defining moment could be as simple as getting out of bed in the morning or as complex as completing your thesis paper that you need to graduate in you major and everything in between.
Pressure:
As soon as we recognize a moment in our lives as a defining one, however big or small, we are immediately jumped and clawed by a rampant monkey known as Pressure. We are trained to think of Pressure as the enemy, the unfair burden that holds us down. This monkey comes equipped with a compilation of the awful and the impossible, a sort of "greatest hits" of unreasonable expectations and complete bummers: Traffic is heavy, you have a report due tomorrow on a topic you know nothing about, your "girl" wants to "talk" about "your relationship" (smh), you got mad bills due, your coach doesn't like you... Pressure. This is the reason a lot of people fail, because they "buckle under pressure" (that monkey is no joke, I swear).
I love how athletes always get up in post game interviews and talk about "there was no pressure for me" or "the pressure is all on the other team," THAT'S BULLS***. The pressure is there whether you acknowledge it or not. Pressure can come from many different places: expectations from parents, bill collectors, pressure from friends etc., but at the end of the day pressure comes from YOU. That's right. It's an involuntary excrement of the human body that indicates opportunity and precedes success. Therefore, when we see that damn pressure monkey, rather than shun him, we should embrace him because he only comes when there is. . .
Opportunity:
No matter how we approach pressure, it inevitably leads us to opportunity. How we use that opportunity is up to us. Seize the moment! This is why I've come to love pressure. I get excited, because there's that feeling that I am on the verge of achieving something that I wanted. Whenever we get close to achieving something we want there is pressure punctuated by opportunity. When you are able to see things in this light it's amazing how your outlook on life will change because now you know where that anxiety is coming from. All that's left to do is take. . .
Action:
This part is simple but probably the hardest. . . ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING! You've assessed the situation, you see the opportunity before you, now figure out what you need to do and ACT on it. That means, if your goal is to get to class/work on time, the action is actually getting out of bed when ur alarm goes off. This is the part of the moment that everybody sees. The apex of the moment.
Sure, there is still the possibility that you fail and fall flat on your face, SO WHAT! There's an equal possibility that you succeed and come out on top. That's a great feeling. Either way, you have a better opportunity for success if you ACT rather than watch life pass you by. This is the first (stay tuned there's one more) point of growth because it is when you choose to (Wo)Man up, take responsibility for your action and prepare yourself to deal with the. . .
Outcome:
Make sure you get this, because it is extremely important: AFTER YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE ACTION, YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO FURTHER CONTROL OVER THE OUTCOME. It's done, you've put it out there and let the chips fall where they may. It's out of your hands. This is the part of the moment that turns action into reaction. I pray that your outcome is success. It is one of the best feelings ever and when we achieve it, no matter the magnitude, it motivates us to want to achieve it again. However, if your outcome is failure that does not signal the end of your moment because we are truly defined by our. . .
I say all that to say this: Life happens regardless of what you do, but if you listen, LIVE (that means do something), and then learn, then life might eventually happen the way YOU want it to.
I feel like Rev Run at this point. . . but I kinda like it.
Lo Lights approved: Guaranteed to give you the screwface upon first listen. Fab demands respect with this one and has something for everybody without making it seem like he was trying too hard. If "Loso's Way" were a boxing match, Fab would have you in the corner hitting you with steady head shots until the ref called the fight. Where's Mikey Buffer when you need him?
"Had a crush on you. Now, we Kim & Cease/We don't even talk no more... it's no biggie./ I was SO Biggie, you was Faith./ I let you slide in my home, you was safe." -Pachanga
Make sure you cop the "Throw It In the Bag" Remix w/ Dream & Drake to the end of the tracklist to make it complete.
God has incredible things planned for your life, but you have to be able to listen to him and to what he's telling you so that you can claim your successes. Uncle P takes some time to drop some knowledge (AND drop a Sham-Wow reference). Check out part 2 after the jump. Take notes. . .
No real point behind this post other than the fact that I think Amerie is badd!! And I really liked this picture. . . You're welcome. Oh and peep her new video too. It's dope.
Images from Scott Wade's dirty car art gallery. These images drawn in the dust are quite impermanent. One of the cool things about them is how they change over time due to dust, wind and dew. Who else you know can recreate a DaVinci on top of a Van Gogh using nothing but the dust on their mini cooper. That's like Michaelangelo doing the Sistine Chapel on a etch-a-sketch and then throwing it at you. More pics after the jump.
Tarah is an American Model from North Carolina. She's best known for being on the television show "Project Runway". More pics after the jump. . . You're Welcome.
"The victory of success is half won when one gains the habit of setting goals and achieving them. Even the most tedious chore will become endurable as you parade through each day convinced that every task, no matter how menial or boring, brings you closer to fulfilling your dreams."
Earlier in the week I took the liberty to shed light on this horrible haircut phenomenon that is taking over Hollywood. I filed Rihanna's new do at the lowest posible spot on the totem pole. However, upon further review, I can now understand what she was attempting to accomplish.
I am in no way is attempting to justify her decision to do what she did, nor am I taking back anything I said about her cut earlier (why I do feel like Chris Brown right now). I'm just saying that there are certain circumstances, such as the one above, where Rihanna's hair appears presentable... The cow lick is sexy.
NEW LL 12 PLAYLIST IS UP. I think the playlist is one of my favorite parts of the blog because it's how I share exactly what's been influencing me music wise at the moment. I never really tell people what to listen to or what's hot at the moment, because music is subjective and means something different to everyone, but the Lo Lights playlist is my subtle way of doing that. This is my favorite one yet, so I encourage you to take heed. There's something for everybody and everything for me.
Tim O'Brien premiered this realistic drawing of Charlie Brown at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica. The Theme of the are show was "Monsters." O'Brien's reasoning for choosing to draw Mr. Brown is as follows:
I looked at the list of invites and then imagined all of the usual takes on what a monster is thought to be. Perhaps some will be cute, some ugly. I went in another direction. What if I were to paint a realistic version of something usually thought of as cute and benign? For no particular reason and maybe several, I chose Charlie Brown.
Those Christmas and Thanksgiving specials will never be the same.
O'Brien's work even gained the attention of superstars Jay-Z & Beyonce. . . hit the jump to see their reaction to his rendition of Charlie Brown.
Happy Friday people! I "stumbled" upon this website the other day and since the weekend is just starting, it's a perfect time to make sure everyone's having fun. Everyone should take time to assess whether or not they're having fun in life and why. I advise you watch the video 'cuz there's a lot of great quotes and ideas in there. But, if you don't have the time, or just wanna read along, I took the liberty of writing the basic points for you to see after the jump.
I never really had a favorite color, but I've always liked black. . . Matte Black. It's fresh. . . and it gets a post. Just copped a matte black cover for the iPhone. Hit the jump for more examples of matte blackness.
p.s. A bagillion skillion dollars if you can tell me what song that this posts title is from... if you don't know now, then you have a large "Aha!" moment coming soon (I love those). Thank me later.
I had a delayed reaction on these. I glanced at 'em, went and did something else. Then came back and realized that they are super DUPER fresh. They're from the Kris Van Assche Spring/Summer 2010 footwear collection. The lacing system is off centered (O.G. Dennis Rodman's anyone?) and the colorways are all basic. . . NEEDAGE.
Everybody seems to be cutting their hair these days. That's cool, but just know that hair doesn't grow back all that fast and that that look ain't for everybody. Thus, I bring you "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly" I'mma try to do this with different stuff to give helpful examples of how it should & shouldn't be done.
That being said, all the ladies that are looking for that "cool" haircut so they can have a "different" or 'edgy" look should take notes from Nicole of Nina Sky. Notice that even though she has a drastically short cut, the hair BLENDS into itself very nicely. The proper term for this is "weight distribution" where you blend or "fade" the longer hair into the shorter hair so that there is no abrupt dark/light area in the haircut. If you want a "cool" haircut, that doesn't mean that you have to get a terrible haircut. A good haircut blends into itself nicely, which makes styling it very easy, because you don't have to try to "hide" areas of the cut.
Although Cassie made no attempt to blend her hair at all here, she gets props because she went all in. She had a specific look she was going for and she didn't hold back at all. Her lines are very sharp and It turned out pretty dope. This is the cut to be cautious of because very few people can pull it off and once it's done it's done, but she has the type of face that can carry this sort asymmetry. I file this one under "The Bad" because we here at Lo Lights.com do not encourage this type of behavior from any of our readers.
The Ugly
Not only are these styles on Rihanna & Demi Moore bad, the motivation for these cuts seems even worse. I do not know what they were attempting to do so I couldn't tell you if they missed the mark or not. This is a prime example of one cutting her hair purely for the sake of the trend and gaining attention. Now y'all know I'm all about doing what you feel and not waiting for permission. My motto is "if you like it, I love it"... but damn! You could at least consult with another human being. I'm especially disappointed in Rih Rih on this one. She should know better.
This passive solar design house located in Japan is designed so that the living room can open up and become one space with the terrace. . . sick. More pictures after the jump.
Little known Lo Wayne fact: My great aunt Tomoko is Japanese and just recently moved from Chicago back to Japan. She played a big part in raising my dad and uncles and I would go over her place when I was younger.
[II] : Pause, the less offensive alternative to the addicting yet annoying/unnecessary phrase "no homo".
